Summer 2024 · Graphic Design I · Festival RedesignMay Day Music Festival

May Day honors workers of the past who fought for rights like the 8-hour workday, the weekend, labor unions, and safe working conditions. Most importantly it celebrates workers who recognize the still pressing need for global working-class solidarity.

I knew I could create a bold identity that better intrigues the wide audience of workers that May Day speaks to in 2024. I aimed to make May Day’s modern message clear: the global and historic struggle of workers against exploitation and oppression is still ongoing, and it is arguably more important than ever to gather in order to honor and celebrate May Day, or International Workers Day.

The Wordmark
I began the wordmark process by sketching with the goal of combining image and type to communicate the 3 determined values of the festival:

-Labor Solidarity
-Social Justice
-Community Engagement

Here I’m exploring the concept of a mass of people; their silouhettes creating the letters, alluding to protests, pickets, strikes, marches, and unity.

Mini Picket-Sign Fans
I created handheld fans inspired by protest signs from both historic and modern labor struggles. These offer a way to cool off outdoors but also serve as memorable keepsakes.

Each fan includes information about a specific labor struggle, allowing people to connect these movements to their own work experiences and see the link between historic and present-day labor issues.
